SUMMARY:Economic theory at work: How and why economics shape environmental action
DESCRIPTION:For this event\, Rethinking Economics will provide an insight into how mainstream economics – the common type of economic theory used worldwide – shapes both ideas and actions on what is possible tackling the climate crisis and what isn’t.\n\nTogether\, we will explore how mainstream economic theory and its alternatives of ecological economics and doughnut economics\, are underpinned by different assumptions about human nature and its environment. We uncover how such assumptions frame climate action and to what extent they are sufficiently suited for acting upon today’s crisis.\n\nBy using concrete examples\, we will introduce how decisions at political level are influenced by economics through the lens of a socio-economic analysis. We will highlight what is given the status of importance – and more importantly what is not. How are nature\, well-being\, biodiversity\, clean drinking water and future generations valued in calculations meant to inform live-changing political decisions?\n\nFinally\, we will introduce valuable tools from ecological economics that are already gaining ground both nationally and internationally. The participants will gain an insight into: How mainstream economics functions as a barrier for climate action Which assumptions and methods are actively influencing climate politics How ecological economics is essential in assisting a green and just future\n\nThe event is a STIMULUS event. For all students. For free. Joint dinner at the end of the event.Sign up is required: https://eventsignup.ku.dk/rethink\n\n About Rethinking Economics DenmarkRethinking Economics Denmark (RE:DK) is a network and community for economists\, students and others with interest in economics. We work towards creating economic systems and economic theories that supports a just and sustainable future. We do that by engaging in informing and promoting a new generation of economics thought at universities and the public debate. The organization is tied to five local student groups at University of Copenhagen\, Aarhus University\, CBS and RUC.
